What you get
Why Your Aircon Leaks Water
Water comes out the wrong place for one of a handful of reasons, and most of them get worse the longer you leave them. Here are the causes we find most often, cheapest to fix first:
Blocked condensate drain
Dirty filter or coil
Cracked or dislodged drain line
Rusted drain pan
Poor install slope

What You Can Safely Check Before Calling
Two quick checks cost nothing and sometimes solve it. Turn the unit off at the wall first, then pull the filter and hold it up to the light.
If you cannot see through it, clean it and run the unit again.
Check the drain
Find where the drain line exits outside. Water should drip from it while the unit runs on a humid day.
Nothing coming out, with water inside, points to a blockage or a frozen coil.

When a Leaking Split System Needs a Technician
Some leaks are a five minute fix, and some need the panel off. Call us rather than pushing on if any of these apply:
- Water is running near the switchboard or any power point
- A brown stain has appeared on the ceiling under a ducted outlet
- The unit iced over, thawed and leaked, which points to airflow or refrigerant trouble rather than the drain
- The leak came back after you cleaned the filter
A recurring leak on a split system usually means something inside the unit, and guessing at it risks a soaked wall or a dead compressor.
How it works
How We Fix Air Conditioning Water Leaks
We trace the water to its source before we touch anything else, because the puddle is rarely where the fault is.
From there the work usually runs in one of three directions:
Drain clearance
Part replacement
Bigger faults
Before any of that work starts, you get the figure in writing under our Fixed Upfront Pricing. No hourly rates, no bill shock, and the repair is covered afterwards by our Lifetime Labour Warranty if a workmanship fault ever reappears.
In detail
Leaking Ducted and Evaporative Units
Ducted units hide their leaks in the ceiling space, which is what makes them the risky ones. By the time a stain shows on the plasterboard, the insulation above it has usually been wet for weeks.
So book an inspection the moment you notice a drip or a musty smell near a ducted outlet.
Evaporative is different
Evaporative systems work by moving water, so the usual faults are worn pads, a stuck float valve or a blocked bleed-off line.
Those faults show up most often at the first hot spell after the unit has sat dry all winter. A pre-summer service catches nearly all of it, and our evaporative cooling page explains what that involves.

Leaking Water FAQs
Is water leaking from my aircon an emergency?
Turn the unit off at the wall first, because water and electricity do not mix. A slow drip is not usually urgent, but it should be looked at within a day or two.
Why does my unit leak more on humid days?
Adelaide gets a handful of humid days each summer, and on those days a coil running below dew point can ice up, then dump meltwater through the unit once it thaws.
Can a leaking unit damage my ceiling?
It can. Ducted units sitting in a ceiling space above a brick cottage can soak plasterboard for weeks before the stain shows, so the leak is usually bigger than it looks by then.
How much does a leak repair cost?
Every job is quoted under our Fixed Upfront Pricing, so you approve the figure before any work starts. There are no hourly rates and no surprises when the invoice arrives.
